Untreated Hearing Loss: The First Signs

by | Oct 16, 2020 | Hearing Loss, Patient Resources

It is easy to assume that the signs of hearing loss are easy to detect, because of course, “If I couldn’t hear, I would know!”.

I have had many patients say similar things after their evaluation when I inform them that they are actually experiencing some hearing loss and probably have been for quite some time.

Very often, it is the exact opposite, though! Hearing loss is typically a gradual progression that may be hard to notice.

Sudden hearing loss is less common, but this usually occurs from an accident or exposure to loud noise such as an explosion. Because of this, I always like to recommend that everyone get a hearing evaluation once a year to ensure their hearing health is in tip-top shape

However, I realize that isn’t possible for everyone during these trying times. So, I would like to detail a few common signs of hearing loss so that you can decide your next steps.

Our hearing care specialists are here to offer advice, and remote care with our Tele Audiology service, so please get in touch if you have any concerns or questions regarding your hearing health.

The Signs of Hearing Loss

Difficulty Hearing

Okay, this one may seem obvious, but that is why it’s often overlooked!

Hearing loss does not usually happen quickly, and so over time, hearing may become more challenging, so the struggle will be less apparent because it is gradual.

If you find yourself needing to turn up the volume higher on the television or have more trouble understanding what a friend is saying, it may be time to schedule a hearing evaluation.

Your Ears Feel Clogged

Any change in how your ears feel can be an indicator or a hearing loss or issue.

Because it is nearly impossible to look inside your own ear, make an appointment with your audiologist so they can investigate further.

You Avoid Social Situations

Many people who struggle with hearing loss tend to avoid social situations because of the potential miscommunications and frustrations from their difficulty hearing.

If social gatherings are stressful for you because you’re worried you won’t be able to hear things clearly, it may be time to talk to someone about it.

You Feel Irritable and Tired

Navigating daily life in today’s fast-paced world can be tiring enough, and not being able to hear correctly can only add to the stress.

It is essential to recognize that mental and physical health go hand-in-hand, and when one is suffering, the other is usually not far behind.

If you think you may be experiencing one or more of these symptoms, I highly recommend you schedule a full hearing evaluation, as you are most likely experiencing a level of hearing loss.

It is essential to know that the earlier hearing loss is detected, the easier it is to treat. Likewise, any preventative measures can be taken to ensure no further damage is caused.

To make an appointment for a hearing evaluation, just give us a call, and we will be able to help you set one up!
