Many people experience the sensation of hearing ringing, whistling, humming, or other nondescript sounds when there is no external sound being made.
While it is common and can vary in frequency and severity, it still can most certainly be detrimental to someone’s daily life.
Here at Ascent Audiology, we take this condition (formally known as tinnitus) seriously, which is why our specialists are experienced in tinnitus evaluation and offer a wide range of treatment options.
Tinnitus Basics
Tinnitus is a condition where someone experiences the sensation of hearing a sound when no external sound is present.
The sound that is heard can vary between people, but some of the most common sounds are ringing, whistling, whooshing, humming or buzzing.
Although it is prevalent, scientists still don’t quite know what causes it.
Because it can affect seemingly anyone at any age, it seems that there is most likely a multitude of factors that can cause tinnitus.
We know that it results from some physiological change, but that change may not be only within the ears.
Tinnitus can be constant or intermittent; some people report only really noticing the noise when they have a cold or flu or stressed.
Others experience the noise all of the time, and rightfully so; it can become annoying or frustrating in either situation.
We Want to Help!
At Ascent Audiology, we can appreciate that no person’s experience with tinnitus is precisely the same.
While there is currently no cure for tinnitus, we offer various treatments to make it more manageable.
We know that while one treatment may work amazingly for some of our patients, it may do absolutely nothing to help others.
This is why we are dedicated to working closely with our patients to determine what treatment works for them.
We are here to help guide our patients on their hearing journey, no matter how short or long it may be.
We Offer Many Treatments
We pride ourselves in providing many different tinnitus treatments, and the one(s) best for you can usually be determined with a comprehensive hearing assessment.
During a hearing evaluation, we will gain a greater understanding of your lifestyle and physical health.
We can create a treatment plan for your tinnitus explicitly tailored to your concerns and needs with this information.
As far as treatments, we offer quite a few, one of them being hearing aids!
Many people don’t necessarily correlate tinnitus with hearing loss (in fact, it may seem like the exact opposite).
Still, hearing aids can be beneficial in reducing or masking the sound and helping with any hearing loss.
Like hearing aids, we also offer sound maskers that are pretty self-explanatory; they work to mask the sensation of hearing the sounds associated with tinnitus. Another option is medication therapy to reduce stress and anxiety that may be contributing to Tinnitus symptoms.
Sound therapy is also available, such as Levo Systems, which help match the sound quality and volume of tinnitus sounds to create a zeroing out effect, and Desyncra Sound Therapy, which works to disrupt the tinnitus neural signal to the brain. And this is just a few of the options we offer!
Along with any treatment, we also work with our patients on different coping mechanisms and skills to deal with the psychological difficulties tinnitus may create.
We are very proud to say that we take our time to get to know our patients personally and are always very invested in improving their quality of life through the many different services and treatments we offer.
