Cammy’s hearing loss was evident in more ways than one. “A few things were indications of a hearing problem,” she begins. “An inability to hear my roommate within the same room, difficulty with work meetings and social activities when multiple people are speaking and grasping the message. Finally, when COVID hit, my coping mechanism of lip reading was wiped away. My biggest concern at the time of learning of my hearing loss was how much hearing was lost and in one or both ears. I knew I had some hearing loss in one ear since my late teens; however, I still needed time to accept and grieve the loss of what I thought I had.” She continues, “I knew that each ear would be tested separately and together for functional hearing, and my biggest concern was that I would need hearing aids, believing I was too young for them.” Remembering her initial appointment at Ascent Audiology, Cammy says, “The office was decorated with seasonal/holiday décor, and staff were immediately available upon my entry to greet and check me in for my appointment.” During her comprehensive hearing assessment, Cammy had the chance to discuss her challenges and concerns before taking several hearing tests. Following her test results, hearing aids were prescribed. With her hearing aids, Cammy says, “I am now able to engage in work meetings to a greater degree, go out to eat with friends, and my car radio does not blast others in the car when I thought it was just average.” Giving Ascent Audiology a 7/10 rating, Cammy offers some friendly words of wisdom. She says, “If you have any concerns about your own hearing or that of someone you love, take time out early for a hearing check. Hearing is an essential sensory function and impacts our daily interactions. Hearing loss can therefore negatively impact personal, family, and social interactions as well as work activities.”
